How many sex offenders in our commnuity?
Supatrax has recently reported on a Paedo in Winson Green Birmingham - this just highlights the need to read the annual MAPPA report in your area.
MAPPA stands for Multi Agency Public protection Arrangement - This is the way that sex offenders and violent offenders are managed in our communities. MAPPA doesn't just look after sex offenders, child abusers and rapists, they also manage high risk offenders such as gang members and other violent criminals. Offenders are put into 3 different MAPPA levels:
Registered sexual offenders (Category 1) - sexual offenders who are required to comply with the notification requirements (sometimes called the 'sex offenders register'); i.e. to notify the police of their name, address and other personal details and notify any changes subsequently;
Violent offenders (Category 2) – offenders sentenced to imprisonment for 12 months or more, or those detained under hospital orders. This category also includes a small number of sexual offenders who do not qualify for registration and offenders disqualified from working with children; and
Other Dangerous Offenders (Category 3) – offenders who do not qualify under categories 1 or 2 but who currently pose a risk of serious harm, there is a link between the offending and the risk posed, and they require active multi-agency management.
In Birmingham and surrounding areas, MAPPA is managed by West Midlands Police and Staffordshire and West Midlands Probation Trust. Every year figures are released informing the public about the number of sex offenders in the community. The MAPPA annual report has recently been produced and below are the figures for the West Midlands. The number of sex offenders and MAPPA offenders are broken down into the Police operating areas.
Crispin Blunt, Prisons and Probation Minister said:
"Convicted sex offenders are now subject to more checks than ever before. The sex offenders register ensures monitoring is in place and agencies can continue to protect the public from known sex offenders living in the community.
Last month, the Government announced 20 police forces nationwide would be part of the roll-out of the Child Sex Offender Disclosure Scheme that allows parents to ask police if someone in contact with their children is a convicted paedophile."
Below is a break down of how many sex offenders and MAPPA offenders are in 'YOUR' area of the West Mids:
